- noun in modern dyeing, colors which are produced by definite chemical change of dyes already attached to the yarn or cloth: thus, cotton dyed yellow with primulin, by exposure to the diazotizing action of nitrous acid and afterward to an alkaline solution of β-naphthol, acquires a deep-red color.
